Our bedrooms should be our sanctuary. “It’s the one room that enables me to rest, restore and revitalize. It’s my safe space, my comfort zone,” says Marie-Charlotte, or Macha, of Westlake Home. “I don’t know about you, but I spend a lot of time in there. How much time do you spend?”
Did you know that the average person sleeps about 8 hours? That’s a a total of 2,920 hours on average per year, spent in our bedrooms. And that’s just our ‘sleeping time,’ which doesn’t include all the other activities we do in our bedroom.
With all that time spent, it only makes sense to optimize our bedrooms with a set up that promotes the best sleep possible. I’ve done my fair share of moves over the years and every single time, I struggled with how to best set up my bedroom. Where I should put my bed, what colors are best to promote good sleep, etc. After a few days I’d determine that it wasn’t working out and rearrange the room all over again. It just didn’t feel right. I wasn’t comfortable.
Having had enough, I started to research the art of Feng Shui, and how to organize my bedroom for optimal comfort, relaxation and restorative rest.
What is Feng Shui?
Literally, “Feng” means “wind” and “Shui” means “water” in Chinese. It’s an ancient Chinese art that can be traced back to sixth century B.C. and is known as “the art of arranging space, objects, furniture and colors to allow free flow of energy (qi). This creates peace, balance and harmony. Pretty cool, right?
I learned that Feng Shui can be very complex and overwhelming, as there are so many things you can do to feng shui your bedroom for the optimal result. But I came to the realization that there were a few easy things that I could do that would make a big difference.
Here’s my list of how to Feng Shui your bedroom in eight easy steps:
Step 1: Get a solid headboard for your bed. A headboard (preferably wood) represents stability and support. So be sure to place it against a sturdy wall. Don’t place it underneath a window (especially one with a draft), or near a bathroom door.
Step 2: Strategically place your bed. Your bed is the most important Feng Shui element, as placing it in the right way promotes safety and better relaxation. You want your bed to face the bedroom door but place it furthest away - and not directly in line -with it. Placing your bed diagonally is always a good solution.
Step 3: Don’t store anything underneath your bed. Everything carries energy, and the “stuff” underneath your bed can subconsciously affect you. Clearing space enables the energy to flow more easily. If you’re limited on space and need to store a few things, stick to soft items, such as blankets, pillows and sheets.
Step 4: Mirror, Mirror on the Wall. There are opposite views in Feng Shui on whether having a mirror in your bedroom is good or bad. Having tried both, I prefer having a mirror in my bedroom. However, I’d recommend getting a round or oval mirror, as these shapes symbolize continuity in relationships. And, make sure that it doesn’t face the bed. It could scare you, make you dizzy and /or restless and promote nightmares.
Step 5: Consider your bedding. I recommend getting GOTS-certified organic cotton sheets. They’re soft, toxin-free, breathable and durable. At Westlake Home, we truly care about the quality of our cotton, how it’s made and the impact it has on us and our planet. I also recommend eco-friendly pillows (but not too many, which can make your bed feel cluttered and crowded), and a soft blanket.
Step 6: Colors. The colors you choose are determined by the aesthetic you’re trying to attain for your bedroom. Earth tones are best for promoting soothing and relaxing sleep, and include light blues, greens, browns and beiges. If you desire more passion, add a little red, pink or peach. Avoid bright colors, however, as they may keep you awake. If you want more clarity and sharpness, opt for whites and grays.
Step 7: The power of pairs. You should try to have balanced, even spaces on either side of your bed, with two similar nightstands and lamps. Pairs and evenly balanced space promote balance and harmony in relationships. If you’re single, it promotes space that you want to make for an eventual partner.
Step 8: Ditch the electronics. You may not want to hear this, but electronics, such as smartphones, tablets and laptops release electromagnetic energy, even when they’re not in use. So, keeping them away from the bedroom is always best. However, if you use your phone as an alarm clock, then make sure it’s at least 10 feet away from your bed.
